Hike-N-Seek 2010The Iowa Geocachers Organization (IGO) is inviting all SLAGA members to their big annual event this month. This year's geocaching competition will be held at Rodeo Park in Fort Madison, Iowa, the weekend of September 25-26. Can't stay that long? No problem -- you'll still be able to win cool prizes. You can opt not to compete, and just go caching at your leisure, with upwards of 150 new permanent caches placed just in time for the weekend. The event will officially begin at 8:00 am Saturday, with some socializing, GPSr loading (bring your cables and drivers!), and strategizing. Important instructions happen at 9:45 am, and the competition begins at 10:00 am. They'll fire up the grills for you around 5:30 pm -- bring your favorite grill food and a dish to share -- salad, side, or dessert. Basic beverages will be available. Don't forget your chair for sitting around the fire (unless you plan to spend the night caching!) and your flashlights and headlamps to hunt the night caches. Sounds like an awesome event! See GC2543D on geocaching.com for all the details.

This workshop is for those interested in learning about geocaching, and for businesses and tourist sites interested in having a geocache on their property. All classes will be taught by Frank Wideman, Natural Resources Engineer with the University of Missouri Extension. Participants will be going outside, so comfortable shoes and appropriate attire are recommended.  Loaner GPS units will be available. The fee is $10 for the entire three-part series if paid in advance, or $10 per class paid at the door.  Pre-registration is required by calling (573) 883-3548. 10th Annual Kansas City Picnic

SLAGA's neighbors to the west are hosting their 10th annual Kansas City-area picnic on Saturday, August 28th, from 3:00 pm to 10:00 pm at Shawnee Mission Park. For more information, see GC258X3. If you've never been before, it's a great chance to meet some well-known Kansas City cachers, and downtown is a perfect place to see the sights while doing some urban summertime caching!

Activities will include geogames, geocoin and travel bug trading, and prize drawings. Fried chicken will be provided, so please RSVP by logging your "Will Attend" on the cache page, and bring your favorite picnic dish to share. See you all at the picnic!

Department of the Interior

If you have an interest in conservation and reconnecting to America’s outdoors, representatives from President Obama’s administration want to hear from you.

Assistant Secretary of the Army for Civil Works Jo-Ellen Darcy and representatives from the Departments of Interior and Agriculture, the Environmental Protection Agency, and the Council on Environmental Quality will participate in a listening session on President Obama’s America’s Great Outdoors Initiative Aug. 20 in Godfrey, Illinois. At this session, administration representatives will hear the public’s ideas, concerns, and issues regarding a 21st century conservation and recreation agenda and reconnecting with the outdoors. The public listening session will be held from 2 to 4 p.m. at the Lewis and Clark Community College.

Prior to the afternoon meeting, officials will speak with youth at a “Rediscover the River” workshop and youth listening session. The youth session will provide participants with hands-on activities focusing on recreation and water resources. It will also provide young people with the opportunity to join the conversation and share their ideas. The youth event will be held at the National Great Rivers Museum in Alton, Ill., from 9 to 11 a.m. The public is invited to both events.

This listening session is one of a series being held across the country. President Obama inaugurated the America’s Great Outdoors Initiative at the White House Conference in April. The conference brought together leaders from communities across the country that are working to protect their outdoor spaces and focused on developing and supporting innovative ideas for improving conservation and recreation at the local level.

The secretaries of Interior and Agriculture, Administrator of the Environmental Protection Agency and Chair of the Council on Environmental Quality have been asked by the president to lead this effort and to listen and learn from people across the country.

WHO: Jo-Ellen Darcy, the Assistant Secretary of the Army for Civil Works, Secretary of Interior, and other agency leaders will be present to hear your thoughts and participate in a conversation about America’s Great Outdoors.

WHAT: Opportunities to share your ideas with senior officials from the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, the Departments of Interior and Agriculture, the Environmental Protection Agency, and the Council on Environmental Quality.

National Public Lands Day

On September 25, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers is asking for your help. Mark Twain Lake -- the site of SLAGA's Midwest Open Geocaching Adventure (MOGA) -- and Rend Lake -- the site of next year's MOGA -- are looking for volunteers on National Public Lands Day.

About National Public Lands Day
National Public Lands Day began in 1994 with three federal agencies and 700 volunteers. Last year 150,000 volunteers worked at over 2,000 locations in every state and in many U.S. territories. Now, 8 federal agencies and many state and local lands participate in this annual day of caring for shared lands.

Last September, volunteers....
Removed an estimated 900,000 lbs of trash
Collected an estimated 20,000 lbs of invasive plants
Built and maintained an estimated 1,320 miles of trails
Planted an estimated 100,000 trees, shrubs and other native plants
Contributed an estimated $14 million to improve public lands across the country
National Public Lands Day keeps the promise of the Civilian Conservation Corps, the "tree army" that worked from 1933-42 to preserve and protect America's natural heritage.
